Name: Alison McGill
Occupation: Editor in Chief, Weddingbells
Who is your role model/mentor: My mother—a smart, savvy businesswoman and extraordinary person. She taught me everything I know.
Daily ritual: Hitting my iPad early in the morning to check Twitter. Reading daily papers. A few good cuppas. A Diet Pepsi. An intense morning and night beauty regime. Watching Coronation Street.
What do you like most about your job: EVERYTHING. I love the creativity, the wonderful people I work with and the fabulous industry I work in. I love being the face of the Weddingbells brand and all the media appearances and opportunities it presents. I love that everyday is different; that I work in print and digital; and that I come home at night from work and love whatever I did that day.
What has been your biggest strength that’s helped you succeed? I am a creative soul, a people person and a good communicator who’s not afraid to ask questions and give answers. I also do what it takes to get the job done. Also, I am always gracious and thankful for all the opportunities my job affords me.
Memorable celebrity encounter: Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran. I’ve met and interviewed him a few times. Fabulous man, one I’ve loved for 25 years!
Who is your favourite fashion designer? I’m a big Joeffer Caoc fan. He’s a friend and everything he makes for me is perfect (including my wedding dress!). Also love Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore, Kate Spade and for daily basics it’s Banana Republic.
Where do you go for some retail therapy? Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Holts. I like a little luxury in my life.
What has been your favourite event to attend? At the risk of sounding cliché, my wedding. It was super-intimate, with just my parents, my husband and I. We were married on the most gorgeous February day in 2009 at Langdon Hall in Cambridge—one of our favourite places. It was so personal and absolutely perfect.
Favourite hangout: I adore the Windsor Arms for afternoon tea. Studio Café at the Four Seasons Toronto for breakfast. But my favourite hangout is probably at home.
Favourite childhood memory: Everything. I had a wonderful childhood and the most amazing parents, grandparents and friends. Everyday was an adventure.
Favourite place(s): London, Paris and Edinburgh are beyond amazing. Also love New York, Boston and Hawaii.
If there was more time in the day you would: Sleep. I like nine hours a day, but usually only log about seven.
Last song you downloaded: Duran Duran’s new album All You Need is Now.
Favourite social network: Twitter. I don’t Facebook.
Favourite Blog: Recent favourite, Mrs. Lillian. My colleagues Roseanne and Jenn introduced me to her and I’ve been hooked since. http://blog.mrslilien.com/mrs-lilien-styling-house-blog/2010/4/6/ode-to-mrs-apfel.html.
